Virginia-Certified Benefits

Developers Bonus (owner when horse makes its first start) – Beginning with Foals from 2021

  • Developers of Virginia-Certified horses will earn 10% bonuses for wins in state-bred-restricted races at Mid-Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD, WV, & VA) racetracks. Winners of Virginia-restricted races are not eligible for the 10% bonus.
  • Developers will earn bonuses, up to 25% of purse money, for wins in open races at Mid-Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD, WV, & VA) racetracks, and for wins in open races at sanctioned National Steeplechase Association meets in the Mid-Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD, WV, & VA).
  • *From opening day through closing day at Colonial Downs, Virginia-Certified horses will not earn developer bonuses for wins at any racetrack other than Colonial Downs.*
  • *Beginning with foals of 2023, Virginia-Certified horses will no longer earn developer bonuses for any win in West Virginia. Virginia-Certified horses born before 2023 will continue to earn developer bonuses for eligible wins in West Virginia. Owner Incentives

  • VA certified horses are eligible for VA-Restricted races at Colonial Downs including $100,000 stakes.

Virginia-Bred Benefits

Developers Bonus (owner when horse makes its first start) – Beginning with Foals from 2021

  • Developers of Virginia-Bred horses will earn up to 25% bonuses for open race wins at Mid-Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD, WV, & VA) racetracks. Including NSA Sanctioned meets.
  • Developers will earn bonuses, up to 25% of purse money, for wins in open races at Mid-Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD, WV, & VA) racetracks, and for wins in open races at sanctioned National Steeplechase Association meets in the Mid-Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD, WV, & VA).

Owners Bonus

  • Owners earn a 50% bonus on purses for 1st-4th place at Colonial Downs
  • Eligible for VA-restricted races at Colonial Downs (Including VA Restricted and VA-Bred/ VA Sired Stakes)
    • VA Restricted Stakes $150,000
    • VA Bred & VA Sired Stakes $125,000
    • Owners of VA Breds foals of 2020 and prior are eligible for up to a 25% Bonus for winning non-Virginia-restricted races at any racetrack in the Mid-Atlantic region (NY, NJ, PA, DE, WV, MD). This also includes non-Virginia-restricted wins at sanctioned National Steeplechase Association meets in the Mid-Atlantic region (NY, NJ, PA, DE, WV, MD, VA).

Breeders Bonus

  • Breeders will earn bonuses for VA Breds finishing 1st – 3rd in any open race in North America (*excludes state-bred and state-sired races*)
  • Breeders’ bonuses will be earned for all 1st – 3rd finishes at Colonial Downs and NSA sanctioned VA meets.
  • VA Bred foals of 2023 or prior are still eligible to earn breeders’ bonuses for state-bred and state-sired races at recognized meets, including those NSA sanctioned.
