Virginia-bred horse is a Thoroughbred horse registered by The Jockey Club, foaled in Virginia and registered with the Virginia Thoroughbred Association (VTA).

Incentive Programs & Eligibility

  • BREEDERS of registered Virginia-Breds are eligible for Breeders Awards for winning  races at any racetrack in the continental United States. Breeders of registered Virginia-Breds will also be paid for wins at National Steeplechase Association sanctioned meets in the continental United States.  There is a $25,000 cap on each individual award. Breeders Awards are paid out on a yearly basis.The Breeders Fund is governed by Code of Virginia § 59.1-372 (Important: In order to earn a Breeders Award, a Virginia-Bred must be registered with the VTA prior to winning the race.)
  • OWNERS of registered Virginia-Breds are eligible for a 25% Owners Bonus for winning non-Virginia-restricted races at any racetrack in the Mid-Atlantic region (NY, NJ, PA, DE, WV, MD). Owners of Virginia-Breds that win non-Virginia-restricted races at National Steeplechase Association sanctioned meets in the Mid-Atlantic region (NY, NJ, PA, DE, WV, MD, VA) are eligible for a 25% Owners Bonus.  At the Virginia Gold Cup and International Gold cup meets, 100% Owners bonuses are paid for first through sixth place in non-Virginia-restricted races.  There is a $10,000 cap on each individual award. Owners Bonuses are paid out on a monthly basis. As of January 1, 2018, in order to receive an Owners Bonus you must be a member of the VTA. If you are not already a VTA member, the $100 membership fee will be deducted from your award and you will be made a member of the Association. Virginia-Bred Owners Bonus monies will not count towards a horse’s earnings.
  • Registered Virginia-Bred horses are eligible for all Virginia-restricted races.

  • A Virginia-Bred application form
  • A current W-9
  • A check payable to the Virginia Breeders Fund, in full payment for the registration fees in accordance with the current fee schedule (see above).

Once the registration process is completed, an official Virginia-bred certificate will be mailed to the applicant for attachment to the horse’s Jockey Club papers. Registration is valid for the life of the horse.

Please note that you do not have to be a member of the VTA at the time of registering your horse. However, you will need to be a member in order to collect any Owners Bonus money. If the owner is not a current member of the VTA at the time the bonus money is earned, $100 will be deducted from the bonus amount and the owner of the horse will be made a member of the VTA.
