Register a Virginia-Bred

Any individual or entity winning a Virginia Breeders Fund Award must submit a W-9 form before an award can be sent!

VIRGINIA BRED HORSES

In order, to register as a Virginia-bred, the horse must have foaled in the state of Virginia.

To register a Virginia-bred horse, an applicant must submit to the VTA by the registration deadline (see above) the following:

  • A completed and signed application form for each horse to be registered along with a check payable to the Virginia Breeder’s Fund in full payment for registration fees in accordance with the current fee schedule (see below) or:

Once the registration process is completed, an official Virginia-bred certificate will be mailed to the applicant for attachment to the horse’s Jockey Club papers. Registration is valid for the life of the horse.

Important: In order to earn an award, a Virginia-Bred must be registered prior to running any race which is part of the Virginia Breeders Fund’s programs.

Please note that you do NOT have to be a current Virginia Thoroughbred Association member to register Thoroughbreds, participate in or earn awards from the Virginia Breeders Fund. However, we encourage you to join the Association today. As a VTA member, you will enjoy substantial savings on registration fees and many other benefits, and you will be supporting the Association’s efforts to grow and strengthen our Commonwealth’s native breeding and racing industry.


 

VIRGINIA STALLIONS

Stallion owners must submit to the VTA by the registration deadline (see above) the following:

A completed and signed stallion application form for each stallion to be registered along with a check payable to the Virginia Breeders Fund in full payment for the registration fee in accordance with the current fee schedule (see above) or:

A copy of the stallion’s Jockey Club papers.

 

Annual registration makes a Virginia stallion eligible to receive awards based on the performance of the resulting foal crop from the breeding season in which the stallion is registered. (For example: Virginia stallions registered in 2007 are eligible for awards based on the performance of their 2008 foal crop.)

Important: Stallions MUST register ANNUALLY with the Virginia Breeders Fund.


 

VIRGINIA SIRED HORSES

To register a Virginia-sired horse, an applicant must submit to the VTA the following:

A completed and signed application form for each horse to be registered A check payable to the Virginia Breeders Fund in full payment for registration fees in accordance with the current fee schedule (see below) or:
