Virginia-bred horse is a Thoroughbred horse registered by The Jockey Club, foaled in Virginia and registered with the Virginia Thoroughbred Association (VTA).

Incentive Programs & Eligibility

  • BREEDERS of registered Virginia-Breds are eligible for Breeders Awards for winning non-Virginia-restricted races at any racetrack in the continental United States. Breeders Awards are paid out on a yearly basis.The Breeders Fund is governed by Code of Virginia § 59.1-372 (Important: In order to earn a Breeders Award, a Virginia-Bred must be registered with the VTA prior to winning the race.)
  • OWNERS of registered Virginia-Breds are eligible for a 25% Owners Bonus for winning non-Virginia-restricted races at any racetrack in the Mid-Atlantic region (NY, NJ, PA, DE, WV, MD). Owners Bonuses are paid out on a monthly basis. Virginia-Bred Owners Bonus monies will not count towards a horse’s earnings.
  • Registered Virginia-Bred horses are eligible for all Virginia-restricted races.

To register by mail, please submit the following materials:

  • A Virginia-Bred application form
  • A current W-9
  • A check payable to the Virginia Breeders Fund, in full payment for the registration fees in accordance with the current fee schedule (see above).

Once the registration process is completed, an official Virginia-bred certificate will be mailed to the applicant for attachment to the horse’s Jockey Club papers. Registration is valid for the life of the horse.

Please note that you do not have to be a member of the VTA at the time of registering your horse. However, you will need to be a member in order to collect any Owners Bonus money. If the owner is not a current member of the VTA at the time the bonus money is earned, $100 will be deducted from the bonus amount and the owner of the horse will be made a member of the VTA.
