VLADYKOV WINS VA-BRED RACE AT PIEDMONT

L to R: Tu Baku (Kieran Norris) 4th; Colleen’s Charm (Bruce Daley) 3rd; Vladykov (James Slater) 1st and Prized Pupil (Mark Beecher) 2nd

Casanova-based breeder Sara Collette has a knack for winning races at jump meets. Her most famous product is Virginia-bred champion and Gold Cup winner Salmo, but of late Collette-breds have been dominating the VHBPA flat series for Virginia-bred/sired horses run at the Virginia point-to-point races.

Last week, Collette’s homebred Wahoo won the race at the Warrenton Hunt Point-To-Point and this weekend Collette’s Vladykov topped the same race at the Piedmont Hunt Point-To-Point in Upperville.

Under jockey James Slater, Vladykov, who is trained by Neil Morris was reserved off the pace set by third place finisher Colleen’s Charm.  The dark bay son of Xenodon, out of Medaka by Eastern Echo, rallied to take the lead in the final furlong and held off the rallying Prized Pupil by a neck.

The complete order of finish:

1) Vladykov, James Slater rider, Neil R. Morris trainer, Sara Collette owner, $1,200; 2) Prized Pupil, Mark Beecher, Tommy Lee Jones, John Baffa, $400; 3) Colleen’s Charm, Bruce Daley, Colleen Mahoney, A. Timothy White, $220; 4) Tu Baku, Kiernan Norris, Alix L. White, A. Timothy White, $100.
