VIRGINIA DERBY BY THE NUMBERS

The attendance for the Virginia Derby day at Colonial Downs was 7,618, down from a record crowd of over 9,000 last year. The on track handle was $569, 665. The OTB handle was $119,320 and the big money came from out of state wages — $2,065,263. However, all figures were down from the previous year. No doubt, the out of state numbers are still suffering from Colonial Downs signal being blocked at tracks like Churchill Downs, Arlington Park, Calder, Hollywood Park, etc. and their OTBs.

Here is how the press covered the big race:

Blood-Horse
Thoroughbred Times
Times Dispatch
BRISNET
ESPN
Daily Press

There was no coverage Roanoke Times. The Virginian-Pilot ran a story on Friday about Nicanor, but they did not run a story (even the AP version) about the actual race. The Daily Progress ran two stories, but neither appeared on line so we can’t provide a link.
