Virginia-bred Winners

Virginia-bred Middleburg, half bother to the globetrotting multiple graded stakes winner Winchester, dominated the tenth at Gulfstream on Saturday. The son of Lemon Drop Kid, bred by the Firestones, won the 1 1/16-mile turf contest by 1 1/2 lengths for his second lifetime win in five starts. The 3-year-old broke his maiden at Gulfstream in February.

The Larry Johnson-bred Awesome Lion, by Lion Hearted, broke his maiden at Penn National on Thursday, winning the 6 furlong contest by 1 1/2 lengths. Currently owned by C and B Stables and trained by Charles Frock, the 3-year-old made his debut in May of this year.
