TOTAL WAGERING CONTINUES TO DECLINE, VA ADW WAGERING POSTS BIG GAINS

Total wagering on North American Thoroughbred racing declined again in the first month of 2012.  That said, the market seems to be as stable as it has been in some time with drop representing only -1.1%.  Total wagers in January of 2012 were $818,695,886 as opposed to $827,788,242 last year.

On the positive side purses increased but the most likely cause was a -4.55% decrease in racing days from 330 to 315.  Total purses in January increased 2.75% from $64,068,357 last January to $65,827,045 in January of this year. 

Traditional wagering at OTB in Virginia also declined in January while ADW wagering continues to to grow steadily.  OTB wagers declined from $7,535,480 last January to $6,875,141 in January of 2012, a decrease of -8.76%.

ADW wagering on Thoroughbred Racing increased 26.76% climbing from 3,549,121 in 2011 to $4,498,957 in January of 2012. Colonial Downs’ EZ Horseplay posted at 110% gain in the first month of this year. 
Total ADW wagering on both Thoroughbred and Harness racing was up almost 30% the first month of the New Year.
