Thirteen Virginia-breds Nominated to 2014 Triple Crown

Triple Crown season is officially here! Out of 413 3-year-olds nominated to the 2014 Triple Crown series during the early nomination period, 13 were Virginia-breds. This is particularly impressive given the size of the 2011 Virginia foal crop: 258 foals yielded 13 Triple Crown hopefuls.

According to the Blood Horse, that 413 number of early nominations represents an 11.9% increase from last year’s 369 early nominations and is the highest since 2008, when 449 horses were made eligible for the series during the early nomination phase.

Still have a Virginia-bred to nominate? The 2014 late nomination period, which requires a payment of $6,000 for each nominated 3-year-old, is open through Saturday, March 22.
