Virginia has never been afraid to strike a new trail down an unknown path.

With that in mind, Colonial Downs will add another “first” to Virginia’s racing resume when they host a mixed breed card that includes eight harness races, two steeplechase races and a Thoroughbred flat race this Sunday afternoon, September 13th beginning at 1:00 PM.

The matinee program will start out with eight harness races, highlighted by two $4,000 first leg divisions of the Emergency Squads of Virginia Late Closer Trotting Series. The series will continue every Sunday in September and will conclude with a 1 ¼ mile final on October 4th.

A maiden claiming steeplechase race will immediately follow the last harness race. Augustin Stable’s Beech Cay has been installed as the early
6-5 favorite in the eight horse field which will vie for a $10,000 purse.

A Thoroughbred allowance race for three-year-olds and up will follow the first jump race. Jack Fisher’s Seer, who is 2-for-2 at Colonial Downs, is the morning line choice in a field of twelve. The contingent will compete 1 ½ miles and will start the race in the same manner jumpers do.

The finale is another steeplechase event, a claiming race which carries a $15,000 purse and features a field of six. Arch Kinglsey’s Sunshine Numbers, who also has a pair of Colonial victories under his belt, is the 8-5 betting pick. The flat and jump races will all be contested over Colonial’s signature Secretariat Turf Course, which traditionally hosts 80% of the summer thoroughbred meet’s races.

Colonial Downs will also offer a special “Mixed Breed Pick-3” that covers races 8, 9 and 10. The Pick-3 legs will include a harness, steeplechase and thoroughbred race respectively.

For racing enthusiasts, the track is featuring a “Family ‘n Friends 4 Pack” promotion on Sunday.
