SECRETARIAT BIRTHDAY EVENT RELOCATED TO RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE

The Secretariat birthday event originally scheduled to take place at The Meadow on Saturday, March 31 has been moved to Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.  The program will still be held on the same date from 1 – 5 p.m. in the new Andrews Hall at 420 Henry St.

Tickets are $5 at the door and advance registration is required. Doors open at 12:30 pm.

The program will celebrate not only Secretariat’s birthday of March 30, 1970 and his Triple Crown victory of 1973, but will also pay tribute to his stable mate Riva Ridge, who won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 1972.  Together Riva Ridge and Secretariat gave Meadow Stable, under Penny Chenery’s leadership, the distinction of winning five of six Triple Crown races in 1972-1973, something no other stable had ever done.

Kate Chenery Tweedy (Penny’s daughter)  and Leeanne Meadows Ladin, co-authors of “Secretariat’s Meadow, The Land, The Family, The Legend” will give presentations on the history of The Meadow, Secretariat and Riva Ridge at 1 pm. and 3 p.m.  Because of limited seating, advance registration is required for each session.  The authors are writing a new book about Riva Ridge, due out this fall.

The birthday program will also feature the opportunity to meet former Meadow grooms and jockeys and to see Riva’s first training saddle; a discussion of historical preservation ideas for important structures at The Meadow such as Secretariat’s foaling shed; continuous showing of Secretariat’s and Riva’s most famous races; book signings and sale of Secretariat items; and of course, Secretariat and Riva cake. Free parking is available on the street and in the Brock parking lot near Andrews Hall.

Randolph-Macon College has longstanding ties to the Chenery family.  Chris Chenery, founder of Meadow Stable in 1936, attended college there. Last year, Randolph-Macon College awarded Penny Chenery an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

In 2010, the Disney movie “Secretariat” introduced a whole new generation to Virginia’s legendary Thoroughbred.
