Kasey K Racing Stable’s Rap Tale (on rail) led at every pole around the inner turf track at Colonial Downs on Saturday to win the July 4th $50,000 Brookmeade Stakes by a head.

Four year old filly by Tale of the Cat, out of Rap and Dance by Pleasant Tap Rap Tale, and trained by Bruce Brown, opened up four lengths around the first turn before being rated by jockey Luis Garcia down the backstretch.

After enduring pressure from second-place finisher Edward L. Graham’s Deeliteful Star nearing the quarter pole, she kicked clear by two lengths until the rival again closed the gap to a head at the finish. R. Larry Johnson’s Listentothewindblo finished 3 ¾ lengths behind in third.

The win is the seventh of twenty-six lifetime starts for Rap Tale, who had previously run off the board in all of her three turf starts. She was bred in Virginia by Edward P. Evans.

Rounding out the field was Suzanne Dempsey’s Dancer For Love, Lazy Land Farms, Inc.’s Trophy Collector, Lady Olivia at Northcliff, LLC’s Meadow Phone Home, Jill Gordon-Moore’s Scrub Island, Morgan’s Ford Farm’s What Will Be, R. Larry Johnson’s And A Cherry Tree, and Doris Jones’ Shesabopper.
