Racing Round-up: VA-breds, VA-trained and VA-owned

Virginia-bred Aix En Provence won an allowance for owner-breed James Falk last week, bringing her lifetime tally up to five. The 6-year-old daughter of Rock Slide was second in a stake at the same venue last out and made it one better here, nabbing a length victory under a strong drive. Aix En Provence has come into her own this year, lodging three of her lifetime victories since April.

Across the continent, Diane Manning’s 4-year-old filly Disco Barbie ran a game second in the Grade II Bessarabian Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday. The daughter of Pure Prize has been out of the money only once in eight starts this year, including nabbing place honors in no less than four graded stakes since June.

Over fences, multiple Grade I winner Demonstrative ran third in the Grade I Colonial Cup at Camden over the weekend. Virginia-owned Overwhelming took the honors in the first race on the day, the $25,000 Sport of Kings Maiden Hurdle. Owned by Rene and Lauren Woolcott’s Woodslane Farm, the Phipps-bred sons of Hard Spun was twice second in Virginia in maiden special weights before running away with this contest by 10 lengths for trainer Jack Fisher.
