PARI-MUTUEL WAGERING CONTINUES TO DECLINE

Nationwide pari-mutuel wagering fell again in August, but at a slower rate than the previous month. Total wagering in August of 2009 was $1,217,594,096 which is down 12.35% from last August’s total of $1,389,219,047.

Purses for the same period declined 11.35% from $113,498,641 to $128,028,016 while racing days fell from 709 to 650.

For the year, total worldwide wagering on races in the U.S. is down 11.1% from $9,863,179,762 in 2008 to $8,768,228,778 in 2009.

For the same period, purses have fallen 7.4% from $786,549,808 to $728,117,201 and racing days have droped 2.9% from 4,242 to 4,115.
