O’ TURF CUP – At the beginning of the meet when I put the big cartooon horse on top of Nick’s Picks, it never occurred to me that it was Paddy O’Prado, yesterday’s winner of the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup.

Time will tell how he ranks among previous Turf Cup winners on the track but as for charisma, he sits atop the previous five runners. Perhaps he gets his “horsonality” from his owner, Jerry Crawford of Donegal Racing, who led him into the winner’s circle despite having enough money to let a groom do it. His spontaneous whinnies send small children running for cover. He is immovable in a stand of clover.

His father (sired) is El Prado, the sire 2004 Virginia Derby winner Kitten’s Joy, a horse trained by Paddy’s trainer, Dale Romans. Kent Desormeaux piloted the second win of Paddy’s career and hopes to gather his third in the $600,000 Virginia Derby on July 17th.

After yesterday’s race Romans confirmed the second half of the Colonial’s Twin Turf as Paddy’s next start.
