Mid February Photo Update Of Progress At Colonial Downs

Below are some pictures showing progress updates at Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent from a February 15th visit. The track will reopen in late April with their Rosie’s Gaming Emporium project, which features live simulcast horse racing and 600 or so historical horse racing terminals. Live thoroughbred racing returns on August 8th with a 15 day meet that will run through September 7th. The Virginia Derby will return on Saturday August 31st and the Virginia Oaks is expected to be held on Friday August 30th.

The biggest difference fans will notice is the new drive that leads directly up to the front doors by the pillars for drop offs and valet service.

Work continues at the main entrance area. The Rosie’s grand opening itself will take place on Kentucky Oaks Day, Friday May 3rd.

Colonial’s first floor of the grandstand is in the process of a complete makeover, and won’t be recognizable to past attendees.

The third foor Jockey Club will feature a nice sized simulcast area where fans can bet live races from tracks around the country day and night. The other side of the Jockey Club will feature a higher limit HHR area.

What used to be an outside patio type area heading toward the picnic area is now enclosed and will house a concessions area that features a hot donut maker.

The track dirt will get a new cushion put on in early April. The large infield TV screen will be replaced. The box seating area at the finish line will stay, so fans and horsemen can enjoy a great vantage point.

The paddock will also receive renovations come spring.
