Meeting With Commerce Secretary Brings No Resolution

Representatives from the VHBPA, Colonial Downs and Virginia Racing Commission had a four hour meeting in Commerce Secretary Maurice Jone’s office yesterday to try to negotiate an agreement between the HBPA and Colonial Downs.

During the meeting, Secretary Jones made it clear that he opposed Colonial surrendering its license. Per VHBPA Executive Director Frank Petramalo, the discussions covered the same proposals and requests that Colonial Downs and the Horsemen have rehashed over the last few months. The meeting ended with no resolution but Ian Stewart and Jim Weinberg agreed to discuss the meeting with Jeff Jacobs, after which they are to report back to the Secretary.

The original Racing Commission meeting, scheduled for Friday morning, was canceled. You can read the Tidewater Review coverage here.
