The VTA enjoyed a great turn-out at the Sales Prep Seminar great day at historic Lazy Lane Farm on June 23. Thank you to Frank Shipp and his staff for having us, and allowing this wonderful event to go forward. Thank you also to the Virginia Horse Industry Board for sponsoring!

Participants enjoyed an expert panel that included Kitty Taylor (Warrendale Sales in Lexington, Kentucky), Bill Reightler (Bill Reightler Sales Agency in White Hall, Maryland) and Pug and Susie Hart (Millwood Virginia). Kitty and Bill both have large sales consignments and  represent clients at sales around the country, while Pug and Susie offered unique prospective as owners who have been very active at the sales for years; in addition, a large majority of Pug’s veterinary practice is centered around advising his sales clients.

The theme of the seminar was teamwork, with all panelists insisting that it is the strength of your team that makes a successful sale.

Kitty talked specifically about the role of consigners, who take care of paperwork and inspect horses throughout their lives. She also discussed placement of yearlings and the advantages of selling with an agent who has in-depth knowledge of all of the industry players and the market at large.

Bill spoke about the importance of beginning the prep process early: Prepping sales yearlings is not a 30-day event, but instead starts when horses are foals. He discussed a number of management best-practices, including the need to feed well, especially at the time of weaning. When looking at a yearling, Bill insisted that balance is the most important physical attribute.

Susie and Pug talked about the importance of team effort between the owner, manager, blacksmith and vet. They also touched on best-practices, especially the importance of survey x-rays that ensure a seller doesn’t show up at a sale with problems that will affect price.

Thanks again to everyone who attended, and to our sponsors and hosts. We look forward to seeing everyone at the next VTA event!
