July 3, 2013 Colonial Downs Update

Thursday, June 20

Race night on June 20 opened with a $30,000 Virginia-restricted MSW contest.  Lady Olivia bested nine other fillies for her owner and namesake, Lady Olivia at North Cliff, LLC.  The filly is trained by Carla Morgan.  R. Larry Johnson’s Said in Silence finished 1 1/2 lengths back for second.  New VTA member Harlan Crossman was third with his Complete St.  Later in the evening, Larry Johnson came back to win with his Virginia-bred gelding What A Wildcat after Brand New Moves was disqualified.  What A Wildcat, by Wildcat Heir, is trained by Suzanne Dempsey.  Crozet-based trainer Patrick Nuesch had a big night, wining the second race with Saint Zits and the seventh with Braeburn Farm LP’s Silent Tale.

Friday, June 21

Virginians dominated on Friday night, winning 5 of the 8 races carded.  Trappe D’Or started the party by taking the first for owner/breeder S. Bruce Smart and trainer Jimmy Day.  Magalen   O. Bryant picked up her first win of the meet with Court Prospect, a filly she also bred.  Neil Morris trained the maiden winner for his second win of the meet.  Ashland- based trainer Karen Godsey continued her winning ways by saddling Marq Your Bible to win the sixth race for owner Lisa Calhoun’s Perfect Peace Racing Stable, LLC.  The win was particularly gratifying for Calhoun, since Marq Your Bible’s June 9 start at Colonial was marred by a run-in with a wayward goose on the track as he turned for home.  Marq Your Bible is special to the Calhouns since Lisa galloped his dam, Red Devilette, during her racing career. Virginia-breds capped off the night by taking the ninth and tenth races.  Class. Bopper won the ninth for trainer Lilith Boucher, owner Rodman Moorehead, and long-time Virginia breeder, the late Mignon C Smith.  The formidable team of owner Lady Olivia at North Cliff, LLC and trainer Carla Morgan made it two nights in a row when their Frogtown won the tenth.

Saturday, June 22

Saturday featured the Colonial Turf Cup Gr. II and a great day of racing including the Da Hoss Stakes and the All Along Gr. III.  Virginia-bred and raised Rodney Jenkins got the evening off to the right start in the first, a $30,000 MSW race that had to be split into two divisions because of the large number of entries.  Jenkins prevailed in both divisions: Love’s Not Fair, a Fairbanks filly, got up just in time to win the first for breeder/owner Hillwood Stable.  A Hillwood entry, South Andros, also secured the second division.  The filly was bred in Virginia by Brooke Royster’s Chance Farm, which is also co-owner.  Although Virginia owner Robert Gerczak had to be disappointed when his Action Andy was scratched from the Da Hoss earlier in the day, he had to feel better when his Saintly. Love drove clear to take the $40,000 Old Nelson Starter Handicap.

The $75,000 Da Hoss Stakes was taken by the heavily favored Hudson Steele, trained by Todd Pletcher.  However, Mrs. S. K. Johnston’s Hpofit (NZ) made a race out of it, being just edged out for the win.  Todd Pletcher made it  two in a row when his Channel Lady took the All Along Gr. III for his father J. J. Pletcher and James T. Scatuorchio.

The $300,000 Colonial Turf Cup Gr. III proved to be a spectacular crowd pleaser as London Lane, sent off as the 50-1 longshot in the field of eight, pulled off a huge upset.  In front of the loudly cheering fans, Colonial’s all-time leading jockey Horacio Karamanos directed London Lane, to the stunning come-from-behind three-quarter length victory over Chad Brown’s fast-closing Hyper.  Swift Warrior, trained by John Terranova, held on for third after leading for most of the race.  London Lane paid $102.60 for the win and a two dollar trifecta bet returned an astounding $4,516.20.

Virginia-based trainer Stephanie Nixon had cheers of her own when Boltin Out won his second race of the meet on the night cap, a three-and-up Virginia-restricted allowance.

The crowds may have been a little quieter the next day, Sunday, but Virginia trainers continued to make a lot of noise.  Reid Nagle jumped to the top of Leading Trainer standings with two wins, bringing his total to five for the meet.  His winners, Asian Invader and Bella Promessa, are owned by Nagle’s own Big Lick Farm.  Tara Terrace is in the hunt for the Leading Trainer title with four wins, her home bred Lil Reds Express bringing her a win in the third.  Wood berry Payne scored his first win of the meet with Copper Cooper, a Virginia-bred gelding bred and owned by Teresa and James Myers.  The sixth race was won by Class Officer, another Virginia-bred from the breeding program of the late Mignon C. Smith, for trainer Lilith Boucher and owner Why Not Racing.  Trainer Patrick Nuesch picked up his third win of the week when the Smarty Jones gelding Steady Eddie took the night cap.

The first eight days of racing brought good news: average field size at 9.9 horses per race is up significantly over last year’s 8.1.  These are incredible numbers considering that there are markedly fewer horses on the backside and that the daily shuttles are underutilized.  Attendance is down slightly, even considering the good Father’s Day crowd; however, on track handle is up slightly.  The one disappointment is the export signal sale which is down 6.6% from last year.
