JOCKS FIGHT DURING RACE AT PHILLY PARK

John Scanlan used to bring a string of horses to Colonial Downs and, no doubt, over the years he’s had all kinds of experiences racing in the Mid-Atlantic. But, what happened on Friday was probably a first for the veteran conditioner.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, two jockeys at Philadelphia Park got into a fistfight – and not in the Jock’s room where such fisticuffs usually occur. No, these two – Eriluis Vaz and Ademar Santos – decided to trade punches while riding in the fifth race.

Divine Light, ridden by Vaz, was disqualified after Vaz punched Mi Helena’s jockey Santos in the face as their horses rode along the backstretch. Neither horse finished in the money.
A replay showed that after Vaz threw his punch, Santos appeared to punch Vaz right back. Then Vaz nailed Santos with his whip.

Of course, both riders believed their actions were justified.
