Hickory Tree-bred Wins Laurel Stake

Virginia-bred Ilikecandy, bred by Jim Treptow’s Hickory Tree Farm, won the Maryland Racing Media Stakes on Monday, taking her total tally of wins up to three out of five starts. The 4-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon has never finished worse than second.

Ilikecandy went off the favorite and won the Media Stakes in style, finishing 7 lengths in front of the pack. The bay filly led from the start under Alex Cintron and strode away in the stretch to open up her impressive lead.

Ilikecandy made her debut in September of last year, finishing second in a maiden special weight at Laurel. She returned to win a back-t0-back MSW and allowance at Laurel before finishing second in an Aqueduct allowance in January. The Media Stakes was her stakes debut.

A $170,000 Saratoga yearling, Ilikecandy is currently owned by Robert LaPenta and trained by Graham Motion. According to John Panagot, LaPenta’s racing manager, a next race for Ilikecandy has not yet been determined.

The $100,000 race was run over 1 1/8 miles. Ilikecandy is out of the Real Quiet mare Real Candy.
