Colonial Downs, which features the country’s only one-turn mile racetrack, will kick off its 12th annual harness racing season this Tuesday September 8th with a ten race card beginning at 5 PM. The eight week, thirty-six day season will continue through November 7th, with racing scheduledon Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday at 5 PM, and Sunday afternoons at 1 PM. Doors open one hour before the first race.

Opening week’s highlight is a “Mixed Breed” card of racing on Sunday September 13th. In addition to eight harness races scheduled, there will be a thoroughbred race and two steeplechase races on the same program.
Colonial Downs is also offering a Family ‘n Friends 4-Pack promotion opening weekend (Saturday & Sunday Sept 12 & 13) and every Sunday afternoon this fall – a $16 package includes 4 admissions, 4 programs, 4 hot dogs, 4 soft drinks and 2 Mr. Potato Head Racing figures. Featured event of the fall season is the annual $350,000 Virginia Harness “Day of Champions”, slated for November 7th. The showcase day includes 8 championship races for the top Virginia-bred pacers and trotters of both sexes, and it will be held in conjunction with thoroughbred racing’s Breeders’ Cup simulcast. Almost 600 horses will help fill the barn area this fall, and horses have already arrived from states as far north as Maine, as far south as Florida and as far west as Illinois.

General admission is $2 and kids 12 and under are free. The 4th floor Turf Club Dining Room will be open every race day for meals. Turf Club admission is only $5, and the dress code has been relaxed for the harness meet. For reservations, call 804-966-7223, ext. 1032.
