Virginia-breds seized the big stage set by the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup Gr.2 to rack up four wins and big bonus dollars.

Patrick Nuesch’s Sparkling Halo won the third race for maidens by neck. Sparkling Halo, by Hay Halo out of Lady’s Journel by Chromite, was bred by Hazel Marsh and earned $23,340 for the win.

Mignon Smith’s Mede Cahaba Stable and Stud LLC’s Class Bopper (Boy-Class Vim by Class Secret) also scored in a maiden special race. Class Bopper is trained by Lilith Boucher and ridden this day by Sheldon Russell filling in for Richard Boucher who has a cast on his left arm. Class Bopper also earned $23,340.

Lady Olivia at North Cliff LLC-bred Cryptogram (pictured above winning last year) won the eighth race, a $24,000 allowance. She is by Expelled, out of Uncanny Ability by Cryptoclearance. Cryptogram earned the biggest combined bonus and purse check of the day – but not by much – picking up $23,920.

The last race on the card was won by Larry Johnson’s homebred A Change of Heart in another $23,000 maiden special. A Change in Heart, by Forest Camp out of Special Kell by Parfaitement, earned $23,340 for her winning effort.

On Friday night, three Virginia-breds won as well. Jill Gordon-Moore’s Scrub Island (trained by Susan Cooney) won the third. Parker’sgoldencat bred by Donna Hayes won the sixth, and the finale was won by James Hackman’s Major Bob (trained by Diana McClure.)
