It strikes us as odd that Virginian Edward P. Evans did not receive a single first place vote in the category of Outstanding Breeder or Outstanding Owner for the recent Eclipse Awards.

When facing off against breeders with critical mass such as Juddmonte, Darley or Adena Springs or owners such as Godolphin, Juddmonte or WinStar, it comes as no surprise that a boutique operation like Evans (compared to those above) doesn’t generate big enough numbers to win…But, to not receive a single vote in either category?

Evans bred the earners of more than $4.5 million. He won 99 races from his 560 starts for a winning percentage of 17.6 percent. The horses he bred finished in the top three 268 times total for a win, place, show percentage of 47.5 percent.

He bred and raced two Grade I stakes winners in Quality Road (Florida Derby) and Cat Moves (Prioress Stakes) and the Grade II stakes winner Malibu Prayer (Chilukki Stakes). In addition, Evans bred Grade II stakes winner Charitable Man (Peter Pan Stakes) and owned and bred the stakes winners Light Green, Pleasant Strike and Rap Tale.

We aren’t going to burn any of the VTA’s limited resources to check the record of every owner and breeder that received Eclipse votes, but one would have to assume Evans’ record more than qualified him for a vote or two at least.
