NEW KENT — Longtime trainer Ferris Allen III has felt the economic sting that’s affected the entire horse racing industry, but he optimistically enters Colonial Downs’ annual summer thoroughbred meet because of its place on the calendar and the track’s signature turf course.

“This racetrack and this race meet have a real niche now in East Coast racing,” Allen said, “because it runs 80 percent (of its races) on turf. It’s been around long enough now that people up and down the East Coast with turf horses know to consider running their horses here.”
