The VTA held its annual Virginia-bred Yearling Futurity on Saturday, August 30. We had a great turn-out, with 15 fillies and six colts competing for $15,000 in prize money, $5,000 of which will be distributed as a bonus to the competing yearling who has the most on-track earnings at the end of its 3-year-old year. Bayne Welker of Fasig-Tipton acted as judge of the futurity and Susie Hart led the new judging competition that awarded $200 to the person that judged the classes most similarly to Mr. Welker’s official eye. The competition was well received and sent Frank Petramalo and Wendy Staub home with $200 each.

After the pinning of the Grand Champion, we moved under the tent for a breakfast and listened to Mr. Welker discuss the top four horses, with a particular emphasis on what traits made them good race horse prospects. The group also studied still photos of horses with faults and learned why those flaws impeded ability. The day was a huge success overall. Thanks to everyone who came out!
