Commission Directs Colonial Downs and VAHBPA to Run 5 Week/25 Day Race Meet in 2014

On Wednesday, the Virginia Racing Commission reconfirmed the five-week, 25-day race date resolution they approved previously last December. Chairman Sarge Reynolds further instructed Colonial Downs and the Horsemen submit a signed contract ready for approval at the Commission’s next meeting May 19th.

Upon approval of the contract, Colonial’s satellite wagering facilities would be re-opened promptly. While the horsemen indicated they are ready to sign a contract similar to last year’s, comments from Colonial Downs president Ian Stewart suggested that Colonial will not sign an agreement until they are reimbursed for an estimated $1.5 million in losses attributed to the SWF shutdown.

The Horsemen have presented Colonial Downs with a contract and a meeting between the two parties is scheduled for today.
