Colonial Downs hosted a unique day of mixed-breeds on Sunday afternoon, featuring eight harness races on the 1 1/4-mile main track, followed by two steeplechase races and a thoroughbred flat race to finish up the card on the Secretariat Turf Course.

In the mixed breed Pick-3, Western Duke captured the harness portion, while Torlundy won the Steeplechase leg and Isti Bee crossed first to take the Thoroughbred leg. The resulting Pick-3 payoff was $75.90 for two out of the three wins.

Rider Paddy Young earned a “natural hat trick” by sweeping the last three races on the card by a total of 43 lengths combined. He won the maiden claiming steepleachase race by 27 ½ length abord Silverton Hill LLC’s Torlundy. His mount in the tenth race, Magalen O. Bryant’s Isti Bee (NZ) (pictured), won the allowance flat race by ½ length over Royal Bentham.

Young finished the feat by scoring with Eagle Beagle in the final Steeplechase race of the afternoon. Eagle Beagle won for the fourth time in seven starts this year and has two wins and a second over Colonial’s Secretariat Turf Course in 2009. Young and Eagle Beagle scored in that one by 15 ½ lengths.

Kudos to Colonial Downs, the Virginia Harness Horsemen’s Association, the VA H.B.P.A and the National Steeplechase Association for pulling all of this together.
