The VHBPA and the VTA will be hosting a reception at Colonial Downs honoring Thoroughbred owners and breeders in the VHBPA building on the backside on Saturday June 20. The reception will be held from noon until 1pm and a shuttle will be available from the main track parking lot over the VHBPA building and back.

The 2008 Virginia-bred championship trophies will be handed prior to the start of the day’s races and between races and pictures of those horses and a description of their accomplishments will be played on the Colonial Downs televisions both on-track, in the Virginia OTBs and on the outgoing simulcast signal.

(This is slightly different than the popular format we have used in the past. Due to the economic downturn, the VTA has far less money than in past years. This event used to be underwritten partially by a $10,000 grant from the Virginia Racing Commissions’ Marketing Committee, but those funds were ordered remanded to the General Fund for this fiscal year. So free meals for winners and nice trophies are harder to come by – never mind lots of signage and other costly marketing endeavors.

We are doing our best to get the word out about Virginia’s best horses via press releases, the Internet and other sources including Colonial Downs’ television product and race program. We appreciate everybody’s patience and understanding as we look for new solutions to various revenue related problems.)

In addition, the VTA is holding a paid ticket luncheon and fourth floor suite for the race card which includes the $150,000 All Along Stakes Gr.2 and the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup Gr. 2. Tickets are $50. RSVP 540-347-4313 or

There will be no free hospitality on Colonial Turf Cup day (June 20) on the fourth floor.
