COLONIAL DOWNS: THE FIRST 20 DAYS

Racing on Tuesday marked the halfway point of the 2009 live meet at Colonial Downs. Tomorrow will be the first day of the second half of the meet.

At the midway point Sheldon Russell leads the jockey race with 25 wins and Rosemary Homeister is second with 22 wins.

The trainers race involves the same two familiar faces – Ham Smith (14 wins) and Ferris Allen (12 wins).

We will have attendance and handle comparisons next week.

More Virginia-breds made starts in 2009 (273) as compared to last year (258). The first 20 days of this racing season has produced 31 wins by Virginia-breds where the first 20 days of 2008 produced 32 wins.

The 100% Bonus paid out $234,072 of the budgeted amount of $250,000 for the first half of the meet. Without the $10,000 cap, the bonus pay out would have been $268,492.

In 2008, Virginia-bred earned $274,200 for their wins. Remove the cap and plug in one more winner for 2009 to match 2008 and the numbers would be virtually identical for the two years.
