BODEMEISTER’S TRIP IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY

Virginia-bred Bodemeister in the post parade during the signing of “My Old Kentucky Home.”  Audley Farm would bred who would become the first Virginia-bred to start in the Derby in 16 years (Keswick Stables 1996, Semoran)
Out of the Kentucky Derby starting gate.  Bodemeister (light blue cap) is 6th from the right.  Good start.  Done Talking (Sheldon Russell, Hamilton Smith) is out of the 17th hole while the eventual winner I’ll Have Another comes from #19.
By the grandstand the first time, Bodemeister begins to take the lead while Trinniberg (red cap, outside of Bodemeister) kicks into gear.  Daddy Nose Best is along the rail.  Done Talking is last or nearly last on the outside.
Nearing the wire for the first time Bodemeister emerges with a half-length lead over Trinniberg.  He sets the first quarter in 22.32.  I’ll Have Another is seventh on the outside.  Done Talking is 19th.
Coming out of the first turn Bodemeister is stretching out to a two-length lead over Trinniberg.  Not pictured, I’ll Have Another is 7th while Done Talking is 19th.  The second quarter was set in 45.39.
On the backstretch, Mario Guiterrez slows down the pace getting 3rd quarters in 1:09.80 while Trinniberg tries to move up on him.  I’ll Have Another is 7th in the purple cap and nearly all white silks.  Done Talking is 18th.
Bodemeister maintains his lead going into the turn.  The duo largely separated from the pack for most of the race, moves on.  I’ll Have Another slides off the rail and into 5th.  Out of the picture, Done Talking starts moving forward.
Bodemeister begins to leave Trinniberg approaching the quarter pole.  He would get the mile in 1:35.19.  I’ll Have Another is now 4th moving up on Hansen.
The field starts looking for their lane coming out of the turn.  Bodemeister can take the rail, not only to save ground, but to find a portion of the track where winners had been coming from all weekend long.  I’ll Have Another is start outside of Hansen.  Done Talking is wide and well back.
With a three length lead here, Bodemeister is in good position and seeking the wire.  I’ll Have Another is now second, even with the ever visible Hansen.  Dullahan #5 (Dale Romans, Jerry Crawford, Kent Desormeaux) is just inside the shadows on the outside.
The last time I clicked the shutter was when Bodemeister was at the eighth pole with what appeared to be an insurmountable three length lead.  I’ll Have Another put Hansen away and begins reaching for Bodemeister who has set every fraction.

I’ll Have Another wins by a length and a half over Bodemeister.  In the picture Dullahan gets third.  Bodemeister had finally gave way at the rail.  The final time was 2:01.83.  Done Talking is 14th.  (Picture-The Baltimore Sun)
