Bevery Steinman’s Smart Power Wins Nailbiter at Laurel

Smart Power - Laural 10-24-2013

Beverly Steinman’s homebred Perfect Soul gelding Smart Power rallied to win an 1 1/8-mile allowance race at Laurel on Thursday. The 4-year-old broke his maiden at Delaware in September, was fourth after a difficult trip in a Laurel allowance October 9, and returned here to prevail by a hard-earned nose.

Smart Power raced close to the leaders under Horacio Karamanos, swung five-wide entering the stretch and made a bid for the lead at the eighth pole. Dueling fiercely with Rodney Jenkins’ Love’s Not Fair, the Doug Fout-trainee stuck his nose down gamely to win on the bob.

Smart Power paid $24.20 for the win.
