AUGUST WAGERING IN VIRGINIA POSTS (ANOTHER) BIG DECLINE

Pari-mutuel wagering from all sites in Virginia (track and OTBs) continues to decline according to the figures provided by the Virginia Racing Commission at Wednesday’s regular monthly meeting.

Total wagers for the month of August fell 24% from $12,836,996 last August to just $9,754,598 this August. For the year, overall wagering is down 17% from almost $86 million to just over $71 million.

Thoroughbred handle fell 25% in August – a month that featured racing at Saratoga and a number of headline making stakes races. Thoroughbred wagering for the period was just over $10 million in 2008 and $7.5 million in 2009.

Harness handle in August suffered a similar decline.

Through August, ADW wagering is up 3.5% from $33,562,083 through August of 2008 to $34,562,083 through August of this year.
