Armoire Captures The $75,000 Nellie Mae Cox Stakes At Laurel

Armoire, who finished second a year in the Nellie Mae Cox Stakes, got to the winners circle Saturfday afternoon at Laurel Park in the 2018 edition. The $75,000 event was the first of four stakes exclusively for Virginia-bred/sired horses on Laurel’s “Commonwealth Day” card.

Armoire was fifth at the half, but moved up entering the far turn and caught frontrunning Zenbennie approaching the 1/8th pole. The winner, bred and owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bertram Firestone, crossed 1 1/2 lengths ahead of runner-up Drop Dead Red. Queen Caroline, who won this stakes in 2017, was third. Finishing time of the one mile turf race was 1:34.61. Armoire, a 5 year old mare, is by Artier Schiller out of Wardrobe by War Chant.

Rounding out the rest of the field — Complete St. (4th), Zenbennie (5th), Secret Or Not (6th) and Well Blessed (7th).
