Study on Possible Hampton Roads Casino

The Hampton Roads Pilot today reports on a new study commissioned by the state Senate committee earlier this year, when it voted down two gambling bills by Sen. Louise Lucas, a Portsmouth Democrat. The study suggests that a casino in Hampton Roads might produce $113 million a year for road projects or to offset tolls.

Breeders Cup Registration Deadline Today

Don’t forget, the deadline to nominate your 2013 foals to the Breeders Cup for the $500 fee is 10/15/2013 at 11:59 p.m. (EST).  A 2013 foal is still eligible for registration until 12/15/2013, but the registration fee increases to $1,500 after today.

Colonial Racing Director Tyler Picklesimer Promoted

From the VTA: Colonial Downs has confirmed that Tyler Picklesimer will be returning to Colonial Downs as Director of Racing for the 2014 racing season.

All Gold Cup International Cup Races to be Virginia-bred Preferred

For the first time at the fall International Gold Cup Races this year, all races will be Virginia-bred-preferred in order to encourage Virginia-bred ownership. The change grew out of the success of the Old Dominion Turf Championship and is part of the Gold Cup’s continuing efforts to promote both attendance and participation.

Our Emerald Forest (IRE) breaks his maiden going 1 1/16 miles on the turf yesterday at Belmont for owner Maggie Bryant and trainer Jimmy Day. The Belmont fall meet has been kind to Mrs. Bryant. Three weeks ago she won the Grade 1 Lonesome Glory Hurdle Stakes with Gustavian.


Jacobs Entertainment Revises Offer to Combine Mountaineer Gaming with JEI

Jacobs Entertainment has reportedly revised its previous offer to combine MNTG (Mountaineer Gaming) and JEI (Jacobs Entertainment). JEI is the owner of Colonial Downs Racetrack.

According to an email from JEI CEO Jeff Jacobs to fellow JEI associates, JEI has offered MNTG $5.69 per share, which is about 10% higher than an offer previously submitted by Eldorado Resorts. Virginia can claim another Grade I winner after Saturday, when the Lazy Lane-bred 2-year-old Bond Holder dominated in the Grade I FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita.
