Two Virginia-breds Pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup

Two Virginia-breds have been pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup this weekend. Bond Holder, bred by Lazy Lane Farm, shoots for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, while Blueskiesnrainbows, bred by Ned Evans, will contest the Breeders’ Cup Marathon.

Bond Holder, a 2-year-old son of Mineshaft, won the Grade I FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita on September 28. Owned and trained by Team I’ll Have Another – Reddam Racing and Doug O’Neill – Bond Holder calls Santa Anita his home base.

VTA Announces New Board Members

The VTA is proud to announce the appointment of four new members to the Board of Directors. Sean Clancy, Cindy Tucker, Jim Treptow and Al Griffin join an illustrious board of Virginia horsemen. Existent board member Sue Hart has also been named Treasurer.

Bevery Steinman’s Smart Power Wins Nailbiter at Laurel

Beverly Steinman’s homebred Perfect Soul gelding Smart Power rallied to win an 1 1/8-mile allowance race at Laurel on Thursday. The 4-year-old broke his maiden at Delaware in September, was fourth after a difficult trip in a Laurel allowance October 9, and returned here to prevail by a hard-earned nose.

Saratoga Snacks, a 4-year-old son of Tale of the Cat purchased by Gary Sciacca and Virginian Woodberry Payne for client Bill Parcells, won his second stake of the year at Belmont on Saturday.

Foyle Wins International Gold Cup

Longshot Foyle won the International Gold Cup Timber Stakes, closing to snare a length victory – and earn his backers a $25.20 win ticket. Trained by Bruce Fenwick, owned by Merriefield Farm and bred by Mrs. C. Frank Hopkins, the 8-year-old Maryland-bred broke his maiden last year and won an allowance race at Grand National in April of this year.

Long-Time VTA Board Member Jim Peterson Resigns

O. J. “Jim” Peterson, III has resigned as Director and Treasurer of the Virginia Thoroughbred Association Board of Directors, effective September 1, 2013.  Jim’s decision to resign was a result of his on-going recuperation from a recent, serious farm-related accident which he felt made it difficult for him to continue with his Board duties.
