INDUSTRY CREATES THOROUGHBRED AFTERCARE ALLIANCE

PRESS RELEASE (EDITED):  A broad-based group of Thoroughbred industry stakeholders announced today the establishment of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)—an organization designed to serve as both the accrediting body for aftercare facilities that care for Thoroughbreds following the conclusion of their racing careers and a fundraising body to support these approved facilities.

VTA member Dr. Francis Marion Bush has penned another book: Colonial Downs and More.  The author of Famous Horsewomen of Virginia, Guide to Virginia Horse Racing, Paly Mellon: Visionary of the Turf and Dapple’s Journey, is a retired dentist and college professor who lives with his wife Madge in Florida.

M. FRIEDA HALE 1917 – 2012

M. Frieda Hale, mother of Charles Town HBPA Executive Director and longtime racing executive Leonard C. Hale, died on February 4, 2012.  She was the beloved wife of the late Grayson L. Hale, devoted mother of Lenny, Carol Ann Hale and Gary Manning, Leroy A. Hale and his wife Connie, and Stephen D. Hale Sr. and his wife Deborah.

TOTAL WAGERING CONTINUES TO DECLINE, VA ADW WAGERING POSTS BIG GAINS

Total wagering on North American Thoroughbred racing declined again in the first month of 2012.  That said, the market seems to be as stable as it has been in some time with drop representing only -1.1%.  Total wagers in January of 2012 were $818,695,886 as opposed to $827,788,242 last year.

On the positive side purses increased but the most likely cause was a -4.55% decrease in racing days from 330 to 315.  Total purses in January increased… Continue reading

NEW BREEDERS FUND REGISTRATION FEES

If you are a member of the Virginia Thoroughbred Association, your registration fees to participate in the Virginia Breeders Fund will continue to be the lowest in the Mid-Atlantic.  However, non-members will soon be paying higher registration fees as is the case in Maryland and other states as well.

The fee structure will remain the same for VTA members, but it will increase by $100 per category for non-members. Current VTA dues start at $75 per year.
