(NEW KENT, VA — 7/30/11) — Deputy Fling found another gear as the field turned for home Saturday night at Colonial Downs in the newly named Bert Allen Stakes, and the three year old Deputy Storm gelding brought home a victory for Bert’s son, trainer Ferris Allen.

NICKS PICKS FOR SUNDAY, JULY 31ST AT COLONIAL DOWNS

TALES FROM THE TURF
Yesterday’s Commonwealth Turf Festival provided some dramatic prices and dramatic moments in the five Virginia-bred/Virginia-sired features.
Owner Larry Johnson opened the stakes event with a double as Harbingerofthings won a frontrunning score in the Jamestown and then Doing Great won the Oakley.  Julian Pimental delivered those wins for trainer Michel Trombetta.  After the Oakley, Johnson received the Achievement Award from the VTA.

DELGADO WINS FOUR RACES THURSDAY, TRAINER RACE TIGHTENS UP

(Edited from CLN)  Jockey Alberto Delgado, who came into Thursday’s race card with 12 wins for the meet, brought home four winners last night at Colonial Downs.
The veteran rider scored early on a pair of scheduled mounts, then won another pair later in the program via unscheduled rides.

$250,000 COMMONWEALTH TURF FESTIVAL PREVIEW

Edited from CLN:  A celebration of the Virginia racehorse, coined the $250,000 Commonwealth Turf Festival in memory of Edward P. Evans will highlight closing weekend festivities at Colonial Downs.
