Breeder/owner Henry Tompkins “Duffy” Rathbun died March 19 in Cape Coral, Fla., from complications following a heart attack. He was 87.

DURKIN CATCHING FLAK OVER BOTCHED DERBY CALL

NBC uses long time NYRA announcer Tom Durkin for it’s televised call of the Kentucky Derby, and not the regular announcer at Churchill Downs, Mark Johnson. Unfortunately for the peacock network, Durkin didn’t seem to notice Mine That Bird’s electric move from the top of the stretch until somewhere south of the sixteeth pole.

There has been plenty of press about it, and here is the article from the guys over at Deadspin with a replay of the race that… Continue reading

QUALITY ROAD GALLOPS SUNDAY

Give Ian McKinlay one thing – he’s confident. The quarter crack specialist that treated classic winners Touch Gold and Big Brown has been saying privately that Quality Road’s latest hoof problem is not a threat to keep the Virginia-bred from running in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

Last week, publicly, McKinlay was not as confident when speaking with the media, but privately he remained steadfast that everything was going to work out according to plan. Yesterday, he was again supporting his position.… Continue reading

QUOTE OF THE DAY

He lost a few pounds after the Florida Derby. I wanted to get that back on him. Losing a few pounds and having the quarter crack I was a little worried, but it looks like he put some flesh back on and the foot looks like it’s in good shape, so we should be in good shape. — Quality Road’s trainer Jimmy Jerkens three days ago.

Owned by his breeder Dr. Eric J. Myer, trained by Stephen Pollard and ridden by Ben Garner, the five-year-old Run Softly gelding Roseville Run set the pace and won easily. Expel rallied for second but could not seriously threaten the winner.

Roseville Run, who is out… Continue reading
