MINT SLEWLEP WINS DA HOSS STAKES
Marshall Dowell's Mint Slewlep closed stubbornly to wear down 8-5 favorite Salinja for a sharp win in the $60,000 Da Hoss Stakes Saturday at Colonial Downs.

Mint Slewlep, by Slew City Slew, out of Cry Me A River by Gilded Time, settled into a ground-saving trip near the back of the pack in the early stages of the one-mile turf event. We're Sailing sped away take control through early fractions of :23.93 and :47.77 as Mint Slewlep raced four lengths back around the first turn.

Priscilla Grajam's Salinja made the first move on the far turn to get into second with second choice Giant Wrecker following him on the outside to move into third at the three-eighths pole. Mint Slewlep advanced two-wide under Malcolm Franklin to establish striking position at the top of the lane.

Salinja inhaled We're Sailing in upper stretch but Mint Slewlep was steadily gaining in the middle of the track and Bastille was flying on the far outside after trailing early.

"When I got to the top of the lane he kicked in just right," Franklin said.

Mint Slewlep finished up in 1:37.00 to win by three-quarters of a length over Salinja. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Firestone's Bastille's rally fell a length and a half short.

The Da Hoss was the 4-year-old colts first stakes victory.

Trainer Robbie Bailes deferred credit for the win. "I have to thank Marshall and his wife Carol because they picked this spot. I didn't pick it," he said.

Dowell, a popular local owner from nearby Mechanicsville, Virginia, was equally humble after the $16.60 upset. "Well, it just goes to show you a blind squirrel gets an acorn every once and a while," he concluded

NTRA LEGISLATIVE FUNDING CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY
The NTRA is asking breeders to pariticipate in their Legislative Action Campaign (LAC). Noting that the Fasig-Tipton Eastern Fall Yearling sale is September 29-October 1 presenting an an opportunity for breeders to contribute one quarter of one percent (¼%) of a yearlings sale price to the NTRA LAC -- $2.50 for every $1,000 of the auction price.

One hundred percent of the funds contributed are earmarked to support Federal lobbying that keeps the industry proactive in Washington. From the Farm Bill, which passed in May and allows for faster depreciation of young racehorses, to horseplayer "withholding conformity" legislation that will put pari-mutuel wagering on par with other forms of gaming where there is no withholding, our lobbyists work daily to protect and advance horse racing's needs.

To participate in the ¼% Sales Check-off program and support this dedicated effort, you must note your commitment to the NTRA Campaign when completing the consignment contract. The deadline to pre-commit is Wednesday, July 9, although you may participate until the close of sale invoicing.

Supporters also are eligible to receive preferred pricing from NTRA Advantage, offering products and services from companies like John Deere, Sherwin-Williams, UPS and others.

Please visit www.SupportHorseRacing.org for the latest legislative updates affecting the horse racing industry, and contact Joe Bacigalupo, Director of Membership Development at the NTRA with any questions.
