EVANS HAS THREE ON EXPERIMENTAL
Leading Virginia breeder Edward P. Evans' Spring Hill Farm in Casanova has produced three two-year-olds rated on the 2008 Jockey Club Experimental Free Handicap.

Evans' Charitable Man leads the group at 117lbs on the strength of his win in the $250,000 Belmont Futurity Gr. 2 at Belmont Park. Charitable Man, by Lemon Drop Kid, out of Charitabledonation by Saint Ballado captured the race by a length over Flying Pegasus in his second start as a juvenile. He broke his maiden in his first and only other start by 11 ½ lengths at Saratoga.

Charitable Man was a $200,000 Keeneland September yearling. His dam, Charitabledonation, won $85,640 from just six starts as a three-year-old including the listed Christmas Past Stakes at Gulfstream.

At 102 lbs. on the Experimental is the Evans-bred American Dance, a half-brother to Horse of the Year, Breeders Cup Classic Gr. 1 winner and $4.4 million earner Saint Liam. American Dance is by A.P. Indy, out of Quiet Dance by Quiet American.

Racing in Evans' black and yellow silks, American Dance finished second in his debut at Belmont Park in October before breaking his maiden one month later at Aqueduct. His third and final start was a third place finish in $200,000 Remsen Stakes Gr.2 to Old Fashioned and Atomic Rain.

Evans' Casanova Move was the only Virginia-bred filly ranked on the Experimental. By Langfuhr, out of Casanova Junction by Pleasant Colony, Casmova Move was assigned 101 lbs. The filly, trained by James Jerkins, made five starts with one win at two thirds last year and $62,423 in earnings.

She broke her maiden by 9 ¼ lengths sprinting at Saratoga and then ran fourth in the Gr. 1 Spinaway before finishing third in the $65,000 Love Affair Stakes Aqueduct.

TRF - JAMES RIVER UPDATE
On January 8, 2009, Reid McLellan of Groom Elite certified four new graduates of the James River Chapter of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's program. This week they are welcoming three new trainees.

These men will join three others who have been in the program several months under the direction of Officer Jesse Barker and the graduate teaching assistants. Each group learns faster than the previous group, thanks to having so many trained professionals in the barn every day. The next graduation will be in May or June.

Graduates going out on work-release - The James River TRF program has two graduates who are seeking work-release employment, one in Tidewater and one in the Richmond area. TRF-James River herd manager Polly Bauhan has worked closely with these men, and feels they are good representatives of the goals of the program.

If you know anyone who is looking for trained help, please contact TRF-James River StateFarmHorses@aol.com. There is a tax break associated with hiring these men post-release.

UHC SPEAKERS AVAILABLE
The Unwanted Horse Coalitions (UHC) National Speaker Program is up and running. If you are an equine group with an upcoming event and would like to have someone speak about the UHC, what it does and the problem of unwanted horses, the UHC has a program to provide you with this support. The UHC has volunteers across the country who may be able to attend your event and present information from the Coalition.

If you have an equine related event coming up, please contact the UHC to request a speaker and we will try our best to accommodate you. Any type of event is welcome. If the subject of unwanted horses is a matter of concern to your attendees, or you would like to help spread the word to "Own Responsibly," please take advantage of this program.

The UHC will provide literature to hand out at the event, as well as a power point presentation about the coalition and the unwanted horse issue. When you contact the UHC to request a speaker for an event, the UHC will try to locate the volunteers available and put you in touch with them.

"We hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to spread the word about the issues surrounding unwanted horses and the work of the coalition to equine enthusiasts across the nation," said Julia Andersen, Director of the UHC.

If you are interested in requesting a speaker for your upcoming event please contact the Unwanted Horse Coalition at 202-296-4031 or contactus@unwantedhorsecoalition.org.
