Over the past month, Virginia-connected horses have excelled at the elite level across the country. The VTA caught up with the connections of the six stakes performers at Saratoga and Arlington to get the inside scoop.

Virginia Horseman Edward Stevens Passes Away

The VTA offers its deepest condolences to the family of Edward Stevens, who passed away August 6. Mr. Stevens was the owner of Rocketts Mill Farm in Doswell, Va. He leaves behind life partner Anna Tucker and three beloved children, Kathy Stevens of New York, Ellen Stevens Sullivan of Michigan and Ned Stevens of Montpelier, Va.

On Saturday, Ned Evans-bred Code West won the Governor’s Park Stakes at Remington Park by half a length. A recent fifth in the Grade III Salvator Mile at Monmouth, Code West won the Grade III Matt Winn at Churchill last summer, following a second-placed finish in the Grade II Risen Star. Weekend Runners: Grade I Alabama on the line for Miss Besilu

Virginia-bred Miss Besilu lines up in the Grade I Alabama Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday. The Ned Evans-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro out of Quiet Dance (Quiet American) drops into the two-hole as the 15/1 morning line choice. A dual lifetime winner, Miss Besilu was most recently third to Stopchargingmaria in the Grade I CCA Oaks on July 20. She will face that rival again on Saturday.
