HANDLE and ATTENDANCE

Attendance is up almost 14%, but total handle is down 11%…Who knows why? The handle for the first ten days is down (according to Equibase figures) $1.48 million, but $1 million of that was a big hit on Turf Cup day…On that day, Colonial’s total handle was $2.5 million when it had been $3.5 million the year before. DEBBIE SUE LOOKS TO REPEAT IN BROOKEMEADE

Virginia-bred champ Debbie Sue (pictured right) is the 5-2 morning line favorite to defend her title in the $60,000 Brookmeade Stakes Saturday at Colonial. Debbie Sue will tangle with R. Larry Johnson’s Saratoga stakes winner Changeisgonnacome and Delaware invader Sweetdowntheland.

Debbie Sue, who is by Citidancer, out of Privateers Bay by Allen’s Prospect, was recently awarded the hardware for Champion Virginia-bred Older Mare in 2006 at Colonial Downs on Turf Cup day. She won the Brookemeade last year… Continue reading

KONA BLEND LOOKS TO STAY PERFECT IN VAN CLIEF

Kona Blend will probably be the favorite in the $60,000 Daniel G. Van Clief Stakes for Virginia-breds/Virginia-sired at 1 1/16-miles on the turf off his front running allowance win last time out at Monmouth in his turf debut. It looks like trainer Graham Motion has him ready.

HORSE OF THE YEAR and Breeders Cup Classic winner Invasor was injured in a workout on Wednesday. He will be retired to Shadwell Stud. In 12 starts, Invasor posted 11 wins, including six consecutive grade 1 victories, earning over $7.8 million.
